Syllabus

Course Objectives

Teaching will make use of the immense heritage preserved in the Photographic Archive Sestini Photographic Archive, which today holds more than one million images in air-conditioned rooms; the spaces of the Sestini Photography Museum with its exhibition area, as well as the equipment contained therein and the specific materials for conditioning the photographic media.

The objective is in fact to show students the entire chain of activities of a photographic archive: from inventorying to cataloguing, from conservation - also digital - to valorisation.

The workshop didactics offered by the Museum intends to combine and systematise a learning by doing approach that will allow students to also carry out practical activities, suitably prepared by a theoretical orientation.

Teaching Methods

Lectures and workshop at the Museo delle storie di Bergamo (Archivio fotografico Sestini), with external experts.


Assessment Methods

The exam is included in the project work and consists in a project of enhancement of the photographic heritage fo the Archive. Marks are in thirties.


Contents

Inventory: the arrival of the photographic fonds in the archive and their ordering. Cataloguing: historical-methodological-disciplinary framework. General overview on cataloguing standards with the presentation of the F form, the ministerial layout elaborated by the ICCD for cataloguing photographic works; professional softwares related to photographic archiving (xDams and SIRBeCWeb); layout structure; description standards; vocabularies; field characteristics; subjectification and indexing. Digitisation: techniques and practices for digital reproduction. MIDA Informatica's ZeroUNO project for digital archiving.

Preservation: preservation practices and processes in climate-controlled rooms and standardised materials. Hints on the preservation of digital materials. Valorisation and promotion: presentation of some valorisation and promotion projects of the photographic heritage kept in the Sestini Photographic Archive. Permanent and temporary exhibitions. The cases of the use of photography as a source and historical testimony for the realisation of the exhibition "BergamoBrescia Cultura d'impresa. Stories of innovation in photography' and the 'Bergamo900' museum. The Institute's online portal with over 100,000 freely consultable images (archivio.museodellestorie.bergamo.it). Use of images and rights: the digital photographic archive between promotion and commercialisation. Proposal: Meeting with authors, heirs and curators.
