Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (17/02/2026 - 31/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide: 1) a basic knowledge of music as a component of cultural heritage; 2) the methodological tools to identify and contextualise the main types of music heritage (music books, textual, audio and iconographic documents of musical interest); and 3) notions and tools for the catalographic treatment of music sources.

Course Prerequisites

No specific requirements are needed.

Teaching Methods

Lectures with audio and visual materials.

Assessment Methods

The examination consists of an oral interview aimed at assessing the knowledge and methodological skills acquired by the students, who will be invited to discuss the content and methodological issues addressed during the course and in the reference texts.

The assessment will take into account the degree of in-depth study of the reference bibliography, the ability to make connections between the topics addressed and to apply the methodological skills acquired. The maximum marks correspond to the attainment of an organic vision of the topics, combined with the skills of conceptual analysis and methodological synthesis and the ability to express oneself in language appropriate to the subject matter. Acquisition of the course subject below the minimum threshold, combined with inadequate expression, results in an insufficient mark.

The module Tradizione e gestione dei beni musicali is part of the course entitled Patrimoni e archivi della cultura musicale, together with the module entitled Archivi sonori. The final evaluation corresponds to the average of the evaluations given in the individual modules.

Contents

The course illustrates the main types of musical heritage documents (manuscript and printed music books, opera librettos, iconographic sources, musical instruments, audiovisual media) and their functions in the processes of preservation, use and transmission of musical repertoires. It also provides basic methodological tools for the bibliographical treatment of manuscript and printed music sources: knowledge of the main music bibliographical tools, hints on classification systems and cataloguing models.
