Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (23/02/2026 - 06/06/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

This course addresses the growing need for advanced analytical and decision-making skills that are critical for companies operating in complex and rapidly changing environments. It provides the skills needed to analyze and improve business processes, manage resources efficiently, and meet the challenges of global markets in operations and services. Students will gain skills in representing, simulating, and optimizing processes, making informed decisions, and managing complex problems across different business functions with a logic-quantitative approach.

Course Prerequisites

Basic concepts of operations management, process mapping and simulation

Teaching Methods

The course contents are discussed in lectures and case discussions, with particular attention to the interaction with the students who have the opportunity to formulate questions and propose topics for further discussion.

Lectures aim to introduce and discuss the methods and the principles of management outlined in the objectives of the course.

The course material consists mainly of the slides available on the course page on the e-learning portal. The slides are complemented with further readings from the recommended books in the bibliography. The slides serve as a support to the classroom discussion: therefore, during the discussion in the classroom, further details not present on the slides may be provided.

During the semester, seminars held by industrial experts will be organized in order to improve the comprehension of the theoretical concepts and understand how they can be applied in a real environment. For the same purpose, an industrial visit will be organized.

The password to access the material published on the course e-learning portal is communicated during the first lecture of the course. If unable to attend the first lesson, please contact the professor by e-mail.

Assessment Methods

The assessment and evaluation consist of an oral exam, through the discussion of one home take assignment related to all the parts of the course. The texts of the assignment will be provided to the students during the semester. The home take assignment must be prepared in groups from 1 to 3 people. The assignment discussion lasts around 45 minutes.

Contents

Course content includes:

  • Business process modeling and simulation with focus on operations in manufacturing and service industries.
  • Dynamic simulation techniques: discrete event simulation (DES), System Dynamics (SD), Agent-Based Simulation (ABS). Integration of different simulation techniques.
  • Construction and analysis of complex scenarios to assess impact on effectiveness, efficiency and quality.
  • Definition and use of KPIs to measure processes and support decisions.
  • Development of problem solving and decision making skills based on analysis and understanding of system complexity.
