Syllabus

Course Objectives

Students acquire basic interdisciplinary methodological skills for geographic and urban analysis, as well as application skills for territorial communication (through PowerPoint presentations, infographics, GIS representations, videos, etc.), in relation to a specific topic and several transscalar case studies.

They are guided in analyzing the relationships between humans and non-humans to analyze the set of tangible and intangible elements deposited in the territory by its inhabitants over time, which contribute to defining the cultural heritage of communities and continually evolving transscalar landscapes.

The aim is to provide the methodological skills to analyze a territorial context from the perspective of the specific topic addressed, identifying:

- The original complexity, i.e., naturalistic and environmental characteristics such as soil, hydrography, climate, morphology, etc.;

- The diachronic evolution of relationships between humans and non-humans through the stratification of territorial symbols, practices, and structures attributable to the main processes of territorialization;

- Planning tools at different (municipal, provincial, regional, national, European) scales for specific themes (environmental, landscape, etc.);

- The stakes of a study context taken as the scope of application, outlining the transscalar complexity of the inhabitants involved and their dynamics (collaboration, competition, conflict, etc.)

- Some project proposals aimed at co-designing regeneration, development, or enhancement processes.

Course Prerequisites

First-year students are required to attend an Alignment course aimed at providing basic information on some concepts useful for carrying out the interdisciplinary Project Work activities of the first semester.

Teaching Methods

A Project work is an interdisciplinary activity built around concrete, applied projects that involve co-teaching and active student participation. Specifically, "Project Work: Methods" proposes a unified teaching approach combining theories and applied research aimed at analyzing the socio-territorial system from a trans-scale perspective.

The Project Work: Methos will be articulated in a theoretical introduction and methodological insights for socio-territorial and geographic-urban analysis through interdisciplinary meetings with professors and external experts who will focus on specific case studies, seeking ideas for co-designing regeneration, development, or enhancement processes.

Students, divided into working groups, will be guided in the production of an individual interdisciplinary portfolio, accompanied by graphic and digital outputs, aimed at disseminating their analysis.

More specifically, with the support of tutors and based on a Vademecum available to students, the following guiding principles will be followed:

https://ls-geou.unibg.it/sites/cl36/files/vademecum_project_work_20.03.23.pdf

Interdisciplinarity: The projects produced must demonstrate integrated approaches between geography and urban planning.

Diachronic reading: Interpreting the evolution and ongoing historical stratification of the territory based on environmental, social, and economic changes.

Transscalarity: The analysis and interpretation must demonstrate a shift in perspective with respect to the theme and objectives of the project work.

Field study: Surveys, territorial observation, geospatial data collection, stakeholder mapping

Forms of representation: Texts, photographs, maps, diagrams, videos, 3D renderings, etc.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of both oral and written tests, specifically:

- an oral presentation to instructors from various disciplines in the Master's Degree in Geo-urban planning, supported by visual tools (Power Point presentations, maps, images, and infographics) in the last lecture of the semester, followed by a proposed collective grade out of thirty;

- submission of an individual and collective portfolio to the instructors in charge of the "Project Work: Methods" within 15 days of the end of the course.

This assessment will verify students' acquisition of the concepts taught in the "Project Work: Methods" course.

Specifically, the exam assesses the following:

- knowledge of the concepts taught during the "Project Work: Methods" course;

- critical ability to apply these concepts to the case studies explored by students during the project work;

- ability to present the socio-territorial and geographical-urban analysis carried out orally (during presentations to teachers) and in writing (through individual and collective portfolios).

Contents

"Project Work: Methods" introduces interdisciplinary methods for analyzing the territory as a complex system of trans-scale relationships and basic tools for territorial communication.

Specifically, the peoject work contents include:

● Analysis and understanding of socio-territorial and geographic-urban dynamics in specific case studies

● Analysis of characterizing landscape elements and identification of territorial relationships

● Proposal of ideas for co-designing regeneration, development, or enhancement processes

More information

As an interdisciplinary activity, "Project Work: Methods" will be coordinated by the two professors in charge of the module and will involve the participation of professors from the Degree Program in Geourban Planning and external experts (experts, professionals, and professors from other Italian and international universities).

"Project Work: Methods" will take place in the first semester.
