Course Objectives

The course provides students with knowledge on the theoretical and methodological tools for understanding territorial dynamics and the communication tools of the various stakeholders on specific environmental and territorial issues. Specifically, the student acquires specialist knowledge on participatory methodologies in its phases of sharing values and territorial knowledge of communities for the identification of stakeholders and the management of consultation tables for governance.

Course Prerequisites

None

Teaching Methods

Teaching will be carried out, for a part equal to 20 hours for each module, by means of face-to-face lectures, with particular attention to confrontation and dialogue with the students, who will be able to formulate proposals for in-depth study or debate. They are supported by visual (power point) and digital online tools in order to facilitate learning. The remaining 16 hours of teaching are carried out within the project work, i.e. the interdisciplinary activity built around territorial application projects involving the co-teaching and active participation of students. The project work, in fact, envisages a unified teaching approach between theoretical training and applied research on the territory.

Assessment Methods

The examination is conducted orally, by means of an interview relating to the two modules that make up the teaching area “Communication and Urban and Territorial Governance”. It ascertains the student's acquisition of the notions taught within the modules. More specifically, the examination verifies

- the theoretical knowledge of the concepts developed during teaching

- the student's critical ability to apply them to specific cases.

Furthermore, it assesses the portfolio realised within the project work, consisting of the set of works realised individually and collectively (mapping, infographics, dossiers, project plans and video-clips) to measure the student's progressive maturation as well as the applicative capacity acquired in the training process.

The grade for the teaching area is calculated as the arithmetic mean of the marks obtained in the two modules, to which is added the portfolio assessment, which must correspond to one third of the overall assessment.

This mark, which is expressed in thirtieths, is communicated to the student and recorded via the electronic booklet.

Contents

The module provides students with the conceptual foundations, normative frameworks and methodological assumptions related to participation and urban governance, investigated as processes that require the adoption of inclusive and participatory dynamics of different social actors in urban policies.

Assuming spatiality as a constitutive element of social phenomena, the module provides students with the interpretative tools to understand the social and political relevance of urban governance, investigating the concept of spatial justice, as well as the importance of methodologies to bring out the identity instances of the various components of society, that is, their spatial capital.

In particular, knowledge is provided on digital and non-digital systems and techniques useful for implementing governance processes, dwelling on the role of participatory cartography in conveying the territorial knowledge of the inhabitants declined in the various territorial contexts, also depending on the available technologies. Through case studies relating to the national and international context, the student acquires knowledge of the main urban participation systems and techniques and the methodologies useful for their implementation.
