Syllabus

Course Objectives

This course is designed to provide the students with the knowledge, skills and reasoning abilities enabling them to integrate the Heritage concept into the Environmental Humanities field in the wake of the innovative study and research experiences developing internationally in recent years. Course Prerequisites

Advanced knowledge of English, oral and written.


Teaching Methods

The course consists of interactive type front-of-class lessons supported by multi-media communication tools. Will be also provided interdisciplinary activities built around Environmental Humanities projects with students’ involvement.

Assessment Methods

The exam will be oral and will take the form of a dialogue relating to the thematic fields dealt with during the course and on the basis of the suggested reading. It will assess students’ knowledge, skills, and ability acquisition. Specifically, the exam will assess:


- students’ theoretical knowledge of the contents and methodological references dealt with;


- students’ ability to apply their critical skills to specific cases.


Contents

The course will be divided into seven themed spheres:

- Environmental Humanities and Environmental History: definition, evolution and contents in an international perspective;

- The invention, discovery and ascent of the mountains: explorers, tourists and mountaineers in the global mountains since the pioneer era to the present time (Alpes, Andes, Caucasus, Karakoram, Himalaya);

- The discovery, exploration and scientific surveys in the Arctic and Antarctic;
- Wilderness, Nature, Heritage and Tourism in protected areas: the origin, evolution, current and future directions of National Parks;

- Pathways and Environmental Heritage;

- Memorials and Heritage;

- EU funding programmes on Environmental Heritage
