Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course illustrates the basic tools for the analysis of the media market from an economic point of view, starting from the base of microeconomics.



Course Prerequisites

No preliminary requirement.


Teaching Methods

Lectures and tutorials.


Assessment Methods

The exam is written and consists of two questions, possibly divided into multiple subpoints, aiming to assess the knowledge of the topics covered in the course. The questions can be of an open-ended type, requiring a descriptive treatment of the subjects, or a more technical nature, including, for example, the commentary and discussion of data, tables, and graphs. One of the questions might also be a simple numerical exercise. Each question is graded on a scale of 0 to 30 points; the final grade is the average of the scores obtained in the two questions. Honors may be awarded at the discretion of the instructor if both answers are perfectly correct. The exam is conducted in person, on paper, and lasts one hour.

Microeconomics principles. Media, messages, information and platforms. Consumption, budget constraint, demand function, elasticity. Technology, costs, profit maximization Perfect competititon and monopoly. Price discrimination.Oligopolistic and imperfect competition. Antitrust policies. Innovation and industrial policy.
