Syllabus

Course Objectives

Reading and critical analysis of the company balance sheet. Analysis of business economic performance. Development of analysis tools to support short-term (break-even and optimal mix) and long-term (investment analysis) decision-making processes. Understanding of the organizational dimension of the company and of the methods of designing the organizational structure.

No mandatory pre courses

Teaching Methods

Teaching activities are mainly by frontal lessons and exercise sessions, with particular attention to the confrontation and direct dialogue with the students, who are invited to formulate proposals for discussion during the lessons.

Assessment Methods

The final assessment consists of a written exam. It includes 3 exercises and closed questions about the theoretical aspects of the course content. One of the three exercises can be substituted by a project team work. The project team work consists in an application of informatic tools to topics discussed in class.

Contents

1) Introduction to accounting. Balance sheet structure, profit and loss accounting structure, the Double-Entry Bookkeeping structure. Performance analysis and financial accounting ratios. Profitability, and financial leverage. 2) Introduction to management accounting. Short-term decision making process. Costing and allocation techniques. Break even analysis. Optimal production mix. 3) Long term decision making process and investment analysis. Discounting techniques. Net present value and internal rate of return. Role of uncertainty in evaluating investment 4) Basic concept of organization theory. Coordination cost and market base alternatives. Classic organizational theory. Structuring of Organizations and Organizational Configurations. The organizational architecture
