Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to enhance the expertise and ability to understand history through the sources. The students acquire the method of historical analysis and become acquainted with the use of literary and documentary sources. Historiographical methodology, historical interpretation, critical thinking and analysis, and oral presentation skills will be emphasized. Students will also be made aware of the limits of our knowledge of the past; such awareness is crucial in developing sound and critical judgement. The class is also vital to studying Philosophical Studies with critical autonomy.

Course Prerequisites

The class is at an introductory level; thus, there are no prerequisites. Knowledge of the classical languages (Greek and Latin) is not required.

Teaching Methods

During the course lectures, the material is provided and examined. Powerpoint presentations are used and shared with the students on Moodle. Attendance and participation in class are highly appreciated.

Assessment Methods

Attendance of at least 80 percent of the lectures (10 out of 12 hours per part) is required to pass the workshop.

Contents

The workshop deals with the introduction to the study of the discipline of history: the birth of history, history as a discipline, and basic methodology for the critical analysis of different types of historical sources, with a focus on the comparison of literary and documentary sources (inscriptions, coins, papyri, letters).

During the workshop, sources and materials will be made available for in-depth study of some ancient history topics. Knowledge of these sources and materials and the work of analysis and commentary done on them during the lectures is an integral part of the workshop.
