Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with the tools to understand the fundamental mechanisms of visual perception and their relevance to editorial design, analyze the impact of new technologies on reading and comprehension processes, apply psychological principles to the design of editorial content, and evaluate the effectiveness of different editorial solutions based on perceptual and cognitive principles.

None.


Teaching Methods

Lectures supported by audio-visual materials. Interactive lessons. Practical and applied activities: group work, presentations, exam simulations. Lectures/seminars with guest experts from the field.


Assessment Methods

Assessment is carried out through an oral examination, graded out of thirty. 

The exam consists of three to four questions aimed at evaluating the student’s understanding and mastery of the topics covered in the course. 

For attending students, the presentation of a case study during the course will count as one of the oral exam questions and will contribute to the final grade. 


Contents

The course explores the fundamentals of visual perception and general psychology, with a particular focus on their applications in traditional and digital publishing. Students will acquire essential skills to understand how perceptual and cognitive processes influence the reception of editorial content across different formats and platforms.


Fundamentals of Visual and Auditory Perception

  • Fundamentals of the anatomy and physiology of the visual and auditory systems
  • Perceptual organization and Gestalt laws
  • Color perception and its editorial applications
  • Basic mechanisms of auditory perception


Cognitive Psychology and Reading

  • Attention processes and working memory
  • Text comprehension and information processing
  • Eye movements during reading
  • Differences between print and digital reading


Design, New Technologies, and Editorial Trends

  • Principles of typography and readability
  • Visual hierarchy and content organization
  • Integration of text and visual elements (photo-texts)
  • Principles of sound design for editorial content (e.g., audiobooks, podcasts)
  • Artificial intelligence and content personalization
  • Accessibility and inclusive design

The exam program is the same for non-attending students.

All communications from the instructor to students will be sent via email through the e-learning platform, which students are therefore required to register for.

Students are expected to regularly check the e-learning platform and download the indicated materials.

Erasmus students and those with a PDP or PEI are required to contact the instructor at the beginning of the semester.
