Course Objectives

Course of Philological Translation from Russian Texts: Criticism, Fiction and Poetry


Course Objectives:


To develop advanced skills in the philological translation of Russian texts, with a focus on criticism, fiction and poetry. 

To deepen knowledge of the linguistic, stylistic and cultural peculiarities of Russian texts. 

Acquire critical tools for analysing and interpreting the original texts and their translations. 

To perfect the skills of textual analysis and comparison between different versions. 

Promote a rigorous and conscious approach to translation as a philological and critical activity.


Course Prerequisites

Bachelor's Degree in Languages with examinations in Russian Language and Literature

Lectures with analysis of original and translated texts

Practical exercises in translation and commentary

Comparison of different versions and critical discussion

Assessment:


Active participation in discussions and exercises (20%)

Course programme:


1. Introduction to philological translation


Definition and objectives of philological translation 

The relationship between original text and translation: critical and methodological aspects 

Tools and resources for translation and textual analysis

2. Russian literary criticism and fundamental texts


Overview of Russian narrative and poetic criticism 

Analysis of twentieth-century Russian critical and theoretical texts (e.g. Tynjanov, TomaĆĄevskij, Bakhtin)

3. Russian fiction: authors and texts


Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Turgenev: analysis of significant passages 

Translation techniques of narrative texts: style, register, cultural nuances 

Practical exercises in translation and comparison of versions

4. Russian poetry: authors and texts


Pushkin, Lermontov, Akhmatova, Mayakovsky: analysis of emblematic poems 

Stylistic and metrical characteristics of Russian poetry 

Translation of poetry: technical and interpretative aspects

5. Philological translation of critical, narrative and poetic texts


Philological approach to translation: text analysis, commentary and comparison 

The rendering of stylistic and cultural nuances 

Practical exercises in translation and critical commentary

6. Revision and version comparison


Revision and editing techniques for translations 

Comparative analysis between different translations of the same text

7. Final project

Translation and commentary of a critical, narrative or poetic text chosen by the students
