Course Objectives
In line with the specific educational objectives of the degree program and its corresponding field of study, upon completion of the course the student will: 1) possess a solid foundational knowledge of the historical periods covered and the primary figures of Western thought; 2) identify and interpret the core theoretical issues underlying them, in relation to their context of formation, meaning, and development, including through the direct reading of philosophical writings; 3) applies philosophical tools to their own field of study and to the contemporary world.

Teaching Methods
Teaching activities will consist of both traditional lectures covering the course content and the direct reading and analysis of the exam texts. Lecture material will be significantly supplemented and integrated by resources uploaded to the Moodle e-learning platform. Particular emphasis will be placed on discussion and direct dialogue with students. Students will also have the opportunity to complete written practice exercises via the e-learning platform.

Contents
The course syllabus covers: 1) a general overview of the major themes and figures in the history of philosophy; 2) a closer examination of two landmark works of modern thought. The first section introduces and explores the Pre-Socratics, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Patristics and Augustine, Scholasticism and Thomas Aquinas, Humanism and the Renaissance, Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Vico, Hume, Kant, Hegel, and Nietzsche, alongside a brief introduction to the currents and problems of contemporary philosophy. The second section focuses specifically on Descartes’s "Discourse on the Method" and Hume’s "The Natural History of Religion".
