Course Objectives
The course aims to provide a solid cultural foundation and a set of fundamental theoretical and analytical tools for understanding the main socioeconomic aspects of the contemporary world. The course aims to introduce a basic conceptual framework that allows for a critical approach to the central questions regarding the functioning of modern economic systems. Particular attention will be paid to the importance of adopting a critical approach in the analysis of economic and social phenomena, as well as the methodological need for essential, yet rigorous analytical tools for interpreting reality. The course is divided into two parts. The first, theoretical in nature, aims to provide fundamental notions regarding the main economic theories, considered indispensable for understanding the dynamics of the contemporary economy. The second is dedicated to the application of these theoretical tools to the analysis of key current issues. The ultimate goal of the course is to foster a comprehensive and critically grounded understanding of economic reality, enabling the development of independent and informed analytical skills. The course also aims to promote communication skills and language proficiency, including through active and informed participation in classroom discussions. These skills are complemented by strengthening interdisciplinary learning abilities, including with a view to studying other related disciplines.

Teaching Methods
Teaching is delivered through lectures, with a focus on discussion and direct dialogue with students, who will be able to formulate suggestions for further study or debate.
Assessment Methods
The assessment consists of a 90-minute written exam, divided into two parts:
- Part I: 15 closed-ended questions (not multiple choice), which do not require a detailed answer, but a short one (typically definitions of basic concepts and/or formulas). These questions carry a maximum score of 2 points;
- Part II: One open-ended question, assessed based on the knowledge expressed, the relevance of the answer to the question, the ability to summarize, and the appropriateness of the language. This question is scored out of 30.
The final result is a weighted average of the two parts: 1/3 (Part I) + 2/3 (Part II). To pass the exam, a score of 18/30 or higher is required in both parts.

Contents
The course is designed as a progressive analysis of international political economy. Starting from the framework of the global system and the definition of the disciplinary scope of IPE, the course first explores the main mechanisms underlying the functioning of the world economy—trade, production, and finance—before addressing the main fractures that traverse it, with particular reference to development and international inequality. The course concludes with an analysis of contemporary tensions related to economic geopolitics, power relations, and the configuration of the world order.
The three main theoretical traditions of international political economy—liberalism, realism/mercantilism, and structuralism/Marxism—will be introduced early in the course as fundamental interpretative tools. These perspectives will subsequently be revisited and systematically applied to the analysis of the various topics covered.
The main thematic areas of the course include: international trade; global production, global value chains, and the transformation of labor; the international financial system; development and international inequality; economic geopolitics and world order.

There is no textbook. Teaching materials are uploaded to Moodle during class. Therefore, registration on the Moodle platform for the course is strongly recommended.
