Course Objectives

The course is designed to cultivate critical thinking through a territorialist approach, focusing on the dynamics of sustainable development and international cooperation, particularly in the areas of environmental conservation and climate change. It aims to equip students with the ability to apply territorial analysis across various contexts, a crucial skill for designing and implementing cooperative interventions. Additionally, students will gain expertise in geographic information technologies and participatory cartography, applying these tools to sustainable development, international cooperation, the enhancement of natural and social resources, and migration, using examples from the international context.

Course Prerequisites

None.

Teaching Methods

Teaching will be conducted through face-to-face lectures, with the option for remote delivery, emphasizing discussion and active student participation. Interactive lectures and in-depth studies, involving student contributions, are integral to this approach. Visual aids such as PowerPoint presentations and online resources will be used to enhance learning.

Assessment Methods

The examination is oral and graded on a scale of thirty. It is designed to assess the following:

- Theoretical knowledge of the geographical concepts covered in the course.

- The student's critical ability to apply these concepts to specific examples and interrelate them.

- The ability to address aspects of development, sustainability, environmental conservation, climate change, cooperation, and migration in multiscale contexts.

Contents

This module explores the foundations of development geography in the contemporary context, focusing on environmental conservation, climate change, and migration—key themes in the creation of international cooperation pathways. The first part of the module provides general conceptual tools, emphasizing a geographical perspective on social, economic, and cultural phenomena as drivers of territorial configurations in North-South relations. The second part delves into applied examples of sustainable development processes, including participatory approaches, across various geographical contexts. Special attention will be given to Sub-Saharan Africa, examining territories impacted by crisis situations and cooperation interventions. Central to this exploration is the close relationship between local and global dynamics within the framework of decentralized cooperation that currently guides international aid efforts.
