Course Objectives

PART 1 (Courses 39010/6 CFU e 39030/9CFU) Basics of corrosion phenomena and their diagnosis: fundamental mechanisms and morphology of corrosion; recognition of the corrosion forms and controlling factors; fundamentals of prevention and protection methods; rules for design, management and maintenance; notions for corrosion monitoring. PART 2 (Course 39030/9CFU) Approach to the main corrosion problems in industries and natural environments.

PART 1 (6CFU) Basics of metallic corrosion: morphology, corrosion rate, electrochemical mechanism, potential measurement and characteristic curves. Anodic curve of active and active-passive materials. Cathodic curve of hydrogen evolution and oxygen reduction. Free corrosion potential and corrosion current density. Anodic and cathodic polarization. Corrosion forms: generalized corrosion, galvanic corrosion, pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, selective corrosion, fretting corrosion, erosion-corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, corrosion fatigue, hydrogen embrittlement, corrosion lby stray current. Corrosion behavior of carbon steel or low-alloyed steel, stainless steel, copper alloys, aluminum alloys, nickel alloys, titanium. Prevention of corrosion: design rules. Protection by environment modification: oxygen removal by physical methods and chemical methods. Corrosion inhibitors: types and addition methods. Protection by coatings: metallic coatings, paint systems, conversion layers. Methods for surface preparation, application and control. Cathodic protection: protection criteria for carbon steel and active-passive metal. Cathodic protection by galvanic anodes and impressed current systems. Design and monitoring. Temporary protection technique. Selection of protection methods related to the corrosion form. Material selection. PART 2 (3CFU) Corrosion and protection in natural environments, industrial plants and civil structures: atmospheric corrosion, corrosion in natural and process waters, corrosion in soils, corrosion in oil and gas. Durability of reinforced concrete structures. High temperature corrosion (dry corrosion): oxidation and mechanisms of film growth, formation of complex scale, internal oxidation. Problems of hot corrosion and main environments. Corrosion by molten salts and metals. High temperature alloys.
