Abstract:
Old Frisian is an ancient Germanic language that received attention by scholars only in dialectology, phonology, sociolinguistics and onomastics. About its morphology, derivation is the only process of lexical creation which has been investigated in an exhaustive way; research on composition remains limited (Pospelova 2016). The present essay aims to describe a particular type of compound that is present in Old Frisian (and in other old Germanic languages), the possessive compound. This particular pattern of adjectival composition, which appears with three different morphological structures, [N+N], [A+N] and [Num+N], is investigated starting with a general outline of the characteristics of Germanic possessive compounds, with a focus on the adjectival and nominal members of Old Frisian possessive compounds and their peculiarities. The aim of this paper is to provide an exhaustive description of this type of compound in Old Frisian and to show what this language has in common with or in what is different from the other old Germanic languages (in particular Anglo-Saxon, Old Norse, Old High German and Old Saxon).
