The book inquires italian policing institutions, laws and professional cultures in the first half of the Nineteenth century, focusing on the important case of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, which became a model from this point of view for the other Italian States. It also deals with some features of police activities, regarding public Government inner inspection, the control on public sentiment and secret information practices. The research checks the changes which were brought about by the 1848 revolution and the riorganisation that the Austrian government undertook afterwords. The analysis of professional culture, which is complementary to that of the institutional profiles, has its sources in a number of professional manuals which were published or largely circulated in the whole Italian territory during the above said time.
