Abstract:
Jacques-André Boiffard (1902-1961), eclectic photographer and member Surrealist group from the beginning, is an elusive and fascinating figure, who has remained so far in the dim light despite the significant role played in the history of the avant-gardes. Only since 2011, thanks to the collection that Christian Bouqueret has donated to the Center Pompidou, it is possible to have an overview of his work in this volume which aims to outline the fundamental stages. From the apprenticeship at the Man Ray atelier to the enigmatic photographs of Paris taken for André Breton's Nadja, from the disturbing images created for «Documents» under the guidance of Georges Bataille to collaborations with Man Ray, Jacques Prévert and Lou Tchimoukow, this book , which comes out concurrently with the first photographic exhibition entirely dedicated to Boiffard by the Center Pompidou in Paris, is the first to provide, in addition to the biography, the analysis of an artistic path that stands as the "story of an eye" able to visually interpret the complex Surrealist experience.
