The following paper focusses on the roots and development of the concept of «maturità magistrale», formulated in 1959 by Marco Agosti and Vittorino Chizzolini, in order to define an ideal of teaching profession able to recognize the pedagogical, cultural, political, social and ethical dimensions of his/her daily commitment to an integral formation of the human person.
