In the late 18th century – a time of major upheavals and profound change – the concepts of virtue and force formed a discursive alliance that provided guidance in questions of politics, morality and aesthetics. This monograph examines the as yet mostly neglected interrelations between virtue and force, shining a new light on the complex linkages between literature, history and moral theory around 1800.
