The essay, starting with a review of some of the main publications of Orazio Niceforo (former school principal, journalist, teacher, expert on contemporary school systems and head of the national school office of the PSI from 1978 to 1993, vice-president of SICESE, the Italian sec-tion of the Comparative Education Society in Europe) provides an original perspective to look back at more than forty years of school policies in Italy, to overcome reformist stagnation and recover a school that is increasingly concerned about the dimension of equity for the most disadvantaged people.
