Abstract:
The chapter is dedicated to a review of the main anthropological schools that animated the history Anthropology in Vietnam. It describes its official development since its first establishment, at the end of the Nineteenth century, to present days, when in the late 2000s saw the opening of the first department of Anthropology - formerly called Institute of Ethnology - at the University of Hanoi. A deep and comparative analysis shows how Vietnamese scholars and practitioners of ethnology, despite non formally trained, received a relevant influence from the Soviet ethnological school in the decades after WW2, with a written production mainly adopting Vietnamese language. In the later years of the XX century the influence of French-trained scholars become more evident shaping the main structuralist character of the teaching of Anthropology in today’s faculties. Recent debates are dedicated to the historical reconstruction of the anthropology of Vietnam (2015-2017), carefully studying the interactions of these different genealogies.
