abstract:
The paper deals with the study on Cloisite30B® nano-clay addition for enhancing corrosion protection properties of
polymer matrix coatings to improve service life of carbon steel structures. The effect of additions up to 5 % Cloisite 30B®
on the barrier properties of an epoxy-based system was evaluated. Different tests were performed on low-thickness spe cimens (35-55 μm) coated by hand lay-up technique. Preliminary test was conducted for measuring surface roughness
and by IR analysis to verify the effects of filler on the cross-linking of the polymer matrix. Electrochemical impedance
spectroscopy (EIS) tests were carried out in aerated sodium chloride solution up to 2 to 1000 h exposure. The results
show a positive effect for additions of 1% Cloisite 30B®.
