Abstract:
Along the Upper Danube, into the ancient province of Noricum (nowadays Austria), Severin, a monk, whoarrived in this area in 452 for a religious mission, decided to establish an economic and political agreement with the Germanic population called Rugians, who settled on the upper side of the Danube in front of an ancient town known as Favianae (nowadays Mautern am der Donau). Eugippius, who wrote the life of Saint Severin in 511, used items like rex, regnum frequently, only writing about the Rugians. Different elements from material culture allow understanding the influence of the Rugians’ presence on Roman society during the period of Severin’s preaching.
