Curriculum Vitae

Alessandra Violi is Full Professor of English Culture and Visuality at the University of Bergamo. She coordinated the University's Doctorate in Intercultural Humanistic Studies and the University's Visual Arts Center "Punctum", dedicated to the study of images in an intermedial and multidisciplinary perspective. She was scientific director of several national and international research projects. For Bruno Mondadori she coordinated the Locus Solus series on the anthropology of the imaginary, and she is now co-editore of the series Afterimages (Aracne) and co-editor of the Journal Elephant & Castle. She collaborates with academies and art institutes in the development of transdisciplinary projects on the themes of embodiment and esoteric cultures (Warburg Institute 2025). Her research focuses on the intertwining of literature, aesthetics and human sciences, with particular attention to the area of medical humanities, on which she published the volumes Le cicatrici del testo (Bergamo, 1998) and Il teatro dei nervi (Milan, 2004), dedicated to the corporeal unconscious among the pseudosciences, art and literature. She has also written monographs on the theme of the body as a medium (Impronte dell’aria, Bergamo, 2008), as artistic-anthropological material (Capigliature, Milan, 2008) and in the literary imagination (Milan 2013), as well as various articles on non-hegemonic knowledge in modernity (ed. Bodies of Stone, Amsterdam 2020), from psychic research in fin de siècle Europe to Lombroso and mediumship. She is currently working on forms of embodiment across literature, science and visual culture in the modern era (Skira 2025; Quodilbet 2026 forthcoming)
