Curriculum Vitae
Paolo Riva graduated in 1984 in Civil Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano. In 1988 he received a Ph.D in Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo Ontario, Canada. From 1991 to 2001 he has been an Assistant Professor in Theory of Structures at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Brescia. From 2001 to 2005 he has been an Associate Professor at the same Department. Since 1994 he has been teaching the course of Seismic Design of Structures at the same University. From November 2005 he is a Full Professor of Seismic Design at the Department of Design and Technologies of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Bergamo, where he teaches Seismic Design and Design of r.c. and p.c. structures. From October 2009 to september 2012 Prof. Riva is Dean of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Bergamo. In july 2012 he has been elected Head of the new Department of Engineering of the same University.
Prof. Riva has authored and co-authored more than 150 scientific papers in International Journals, International and National conferences.
The main research fields concern: 1. Seismic behaviour of r.c. structures, with particular emphasis on the behaviour of structural walls and of precast concrete elements; 2. seismic retrofitting of historical buildings; 3. non-linear analysis of r.c. structures; 4. behaviour of r.c. structures under fire conditions.
Following the earthquakes of Salò (Italy) of Nov.24, 2004 and Mantova of May 2012, he has been appointed as an expert in the Commision set up by the Commisioner for the reconstruction. The commision drafted the guidelines concerning the modality for the reconstruction and for the retrofitting and repair projects and, among its duties, reviewed all of the projects concerning public and monumental buildings presented in order to have access to public funding.
