Dr. Federica Guerini got a degree in Foreign Languages and Literature (June 1997) from the University of Bergamo (Italy). Before joining the Ph.D. Program of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics of the University of Pavia (2000), she did postgraduate work at the University of Bergamo, where she also worked as an Italian lecturer for the Centre of Italian for Foreigners. In 2005 her Ph.D. Dissertation in Linguistics won the IX International Competition Price for Studies and Research into Bilingualism (Concorso Premio Internazionale per Studi sul Plurilinguismo) sponsored by the Office for Bilingualism and Foreign Languages of Provincia Autonoma di Bolzano (Italy), and was published by Peter Lang A.G. in 2006 with the title: "Language Alternation Strategies in Multilingual Setting. A case study: Ghanaian Immigrants in Northern Italy". In November 2024, she was appointed Full Professor of General and Historical Linguistics at the Department of Letters, Philosophy, and Communication of the University of Bergamo (Decreto Rettorale Rep. n. 0206436 del 18/10/2024 [UOR: SI000104 – Classif. VII/2] 1129/2024).
She is a member of the Quality Assurance Team of the University of Bergamo for the years 2022-2024 (Decreto Rettorale Rep. n. 29/2022; Prot. n. 0004878 del 20/01/2022) and Quality Assurance Delegate of the Department of Letters, Philosophy, and Communication.
Her research interests include the study of the dynamics and the outcomes of language contact, the sociolinguistic analysis of writing systems and of the interface between orthographic choices and the expression of group identity; the study of the linguistic landscape and of the local Italo-Romance dialect (bergamasco).
