Curriculum Vitae

PAOLO CESARETTI
Paolo Cesaretti graduated in Classical Literature in the academic year 1979/1980 at the University of Pisa discussing a thesis on Byzantine Philology, with highest marks and honors. He obtained his PhD in Greek and Latin Philology (University of Florence – 2nd Cycle) in the summer of 1989. In the academic years 1991-1993 he was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship in Classical Philology at the State University of Milan. In the years 1994-2000 he combined research with publishing activities. In the academic year 2000-2001, he became researcher of Byzantine Civilization at the University "G. d'Annunzio" of Chieti-Pescara; in the academic year 2006/2007, he moved to the University of Bergamo, where he became associate professor of Byzantine Civilization in the academic year 2016-2017 (qualified as full professor since 2017).
He is a member of the committee for PhD in Humanistic and Transcultural Studies at the University of Bergamo, where he has also directed (since 2017) the editorial series of the School of Advanced Doctoral Training. Since 2012, he has represented the University of Bergamo at the "Board of Classics" of the Lombardy Universities at the Regional School Office.
Scientific co-director of the Greek culture periodical 'Periptero', he is a member of numerous scientific committees, associations and academies. He is part of the Board of directors of the Italian Association for Byzantine Studies (AISB). Freelance journalist since 1994.
He has delivered lectures, seminars, and conferences in Italian and foreign universities, museums, and cultural institutes.
Cesaretti has produced critical editions of texts, monographs, commentaries, scientific articles, reviews, curatorships, translations. His approach is historical-philological, open to interdisciplinary developments. He has mainly investigated the period from Late Antiquity to the Fourth Crusade, with a special focus on the following:
- the philological tradition, with particular attention to the work of Michael Psellos, Gregory of Corinth, Theodoros Prodromos, John Tzetzes, Eustathius of Thessalonica;
- hagiography, with particular attention to the Saloi or “holy fools” Simeon and Andrew, the Constantinopolitan and Southern Italian hagiographic production of the 9th-11th centuries, the 'History of Barlaam and Ioasaph;
- the relationship between Byzantium and the West;
- the 6th century, with Justinian, Theodora, Belisarius, and the work of Procopius of Caesarea;
- the relationship between text and image in Byzantium.
He has also studied from a cultural-historical perspective salient figures and moments in the reception of Byzantium in the European cultural tradition and has edited Italian editions of classics of 20th-century international Byzantinology.
