Abstract:
In today’s world, workplace safety is crucial in many countries and across all productive sectors, particularly in the construction industry. Some of the major challenges include the workers’ attitudes, the expenses associated with simulating actual working conditions, and the time needed to adequately train all activities. This research outlines the steps taken and the outcomes of collaboration with Virtual Safety Lab, which focuses on developing a virtual reality environment aimed at instructing safety protocols for the construction and maintenance of road-work sites. The established virtual reality environment targets mobile construction sites, explicitly addressing the review, integration, and placement of road signage within work activities amidst vehicular traffic in compliance with Italian national regulations. The Virtual Reality environment consists of three modules: one the-oretical and two practical. Through the first module, workers are acquainted with virtual settings and gain an understanding of signage and safety regulations. The remaining two modules cover best practices and procedures for mobile construc-tion sites. Training through the developed modules enables users to safely acquire the operational methods essential for the secure management of mobile roadwork sites. Furthermore, this system may facilitate the optimisation of processes and decision-making by training users in best practices that help to reduce costs while fostering a safer and less stressful work environment.
