Maria Rosa Giovanna Scarlata, Ph.D, is associate professor at the Department of Management, University of Bergamo. She is co-Director of StartCup, the educational programme designed to transform entrepreneurial aspirations and intentions into action and counsel participants in their journey towards new venture creation.
Credentials:
PhD in Management Sciences from ESADE Business School (Barcelona, Spain); Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA) from ESADE Business School; MSc in Finance from Bocconi University.
Research:
Her research focuses on understanding how new ventures acquire resources and how different actors can collaborate to foster their creation. She is particularly interested in how firms that pursue multiple organizational objectives obtain resources and leverage narratives to do so, with an emphasis on social ventures, impact investing and social venture capital. She is also interested in the sustainable aspects of organizing and, in particular, the role played by global certification, such as the B Corp, in shaping hybrid ventures, and in the results these organizations obtain. Last, her recent work has engaged in understanding how universities, typically devoted to research and teaching, can act as catalysts for the development of new firms.
Her research appeared in international journals such as the Journal of Business Ethics, Information Systems Journal, Technovation, and the International Small Business Journal. She is an editorial board member at the Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Business Venturing, and Journal of Social Entrepreneurship and ad-hoc reviewer for several other international research outlets such as, among others, Journal of Management, Technovation, Technological Forecasting & Social Change.
She is an Associate Member of the Higher Education Academy (UK) and received several research awards such as the Dale Mayer Award for the most impactful research on social entrepreneurship.
Professional Activities:
She is a Board Member of BCERC (Babson College Entrepreneurship Research Conference) and consultant for organizations that seek to develop a social business model to generate economic and social impact.
