To develop an in-depth understanding of the historical development of contemporary Italy, with particular focus on political regime changes and institutional transformations. To cultivate the ability to critically analyze historical continuity and rupture.
Good knowledge of 19th- and 20th-century European and Italian history, acquired through previous school education. Ability to read and understand historiographical texts.
Lectures, supported by multimedia materials. Class discussions aimed at encouraging interpretive engagement between students and instructor.
Final oral examination. Evaluation will be based on clarity of exposition, depth of knowledge, critical reasoning, and the ability to connect different aspects of the historical narrative.
The course covers Italian history from unification to the birth of the Republic, addressing key political turning points: the liberal monarchy, the crisis of the unitary state, Fascism, the Resistance, and the construction of the democratic order. Elements of social and cultural history will also be considered.
