Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (22/09/2025 - 19/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The aim is the student can reach a conceptual understanding of the complexity of physics, of the relationships between our way of life and the different scientific conceptions of Nature. This understanding is fundamental to be able to teach physics to children.

Course Prerequisites

Nothing

Teaching Methods

Education methods will be verified by taking count of the specific composition of the students and of the contexts of the particular problems. Dialogue will be fundamental because it is the ethical basis of teaching and of learning as well as of every kind of scientific and philosophical research. There will be, beyond lectures, a continuous laboratory where students will be called to discuss short papers written by themselves.

Assessment Methods

The evaluation will be on a scale of thirty (physics, laboratory, chemistry).

Exam will be in oral form on the whole program. The dialogue will be constructive of knowledge, that will be an example about what is the collective scientific construction of knowledge. Beyond lectures, series of seminars will be organized.

Contents

It is a matter of outlining the physics relevant to primary education, its aims and its educational function. The fundamental concepts and models of physics, the theories and mathematical models and their correlation with experiments are discussed. Matter, energy, strength, wave, field, information / entropy are concepts linked to different historical interpretations of Nature and to different lifestyles. Physical theories within their historical context. Theoretical and practical knowledge. Galileo's kinematics. Newton's mechanics. Leibniz' conservation principle. Thermodynamics and irreversible processes: time irreversibility. From instantaneous forces to electromagnetic field. The physics of fields: relativity and quantum mechanics. The physics of life: entropy, information, complexity. The solar system. Stars and galaxies. Contemporary cosmology: the expansion of the universe, big bang, cosmic microwave background radiation, quantum relativistic theory.
