Course Objectives

The course aims to offer an overview of concepts, references, and approaches for managing the plurilingual and multicultural classroom, with the aim of enabling students to:

  • deconstruct stereotypes and prejudices related to linguistic issues;
  • recognize and counter phenomena of linguistic exclusion, both at school and in society;
  • design and implement teaching strategies for linguistic inclusion in the classroom and at school.

The objectives include the acquisition of:

  • disciplinary knowledge concerning the national linguistic heritage, within the historical evolution of the various cultural multiplicities that characterize the territory and the formation of the class group;
  • skills in language manipulation, with implications for teaching practice specific to early childhood and primary schools, functional to the progression of learning and to the pace and modes proper to each pupil, including in cases of specific learning disorders (SLD) or disabilities;
  • the ability to select and propose teaching materials suited to each pupil's starting linguistic condition and to its evolution from an inclusive and relational perspective, as well as a tool for the development of thought and of the aesthetic-expressive dimensions of the person.

Course Prerequisites

Fundamental tenets of Educational Linguistics, as presented in the “Introduction to Italian Linguistics” course.

Teaching Methods

Lectures with particular attention to direct dialogue and exchange with students, together with individual and cooperative classroom activities.

Assessment Methods

Written exam on the topics covered in class. In addition, students who attend the course will give an in-class presentation, while non-attending students will answer an extra question in the written exam, on a topic of their choice among those covered during the course.

The final grade will be expressed out on a scale of 30, in line with the Italian university grading system.

Contents

The course introduces the key themes relevant to linguistic inclusion in school settings. The focus will be on plurilingual and intercultural education, explored through a multi- and interdisciplinary lens that will cover linguistic, neurocognitive, cultural, sociolinguistic, and pedagogical topics and concepts, all framed within a reflection on the Italian and European demographic and regulatory context.
The course will be divided into three macro-sections. The first part (linguistic) will critically explore the themes of bilingualism, the phenomenon of code-switching and the concept of translanguaging, the development of interlanguage and Italian L2 didactics, and the concepts of language attrition and native speaker. The second part (sociocultural) will address linguistic mediation, the management of intercultural encounters, and urban and school linguistic landscapes. Finally, the third part (pedagogical) will examine teaching strategies for plurilingual education, offering an overview of plural approaches to languages and cultures and an in-depth look at the pedagogy of translanguaging, with particular attention to the Italian context.
