Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the first module of the course the student is able to grasp the interrelationships among dynamics of migration, dynamics of social and cultural change and education. The student will finally have a full knowledge of the role that education plays (together with life histories and living experiences) in the intersection of these dynamics and in the on-going change processes of contemporary societies. These interrelations will be analysed in an historical and anthropological perspective and the contemporary transnational migrations between the two sides of the Mediterranean will be studied in depth. A special attention will be devoted to the change processes unfolding in the Arab-Islamic countries and to the ways they are re-configuring migratory mobility in the area of the Mediterranean, also in relation to the on-going wars in the Middle East. The student will also understand the complexification of the mobility dynamics, the redefinition of the borders, the inequalities, the relation with his/her own body and the other's body, in the time of the actual society
The student will also be able to comprehend the complexity of transnational migrations and individual and collective living experiences of migrants in formal and informal educational contexts and he will analyse the interrelations among migratory experiences and contemporary social contexts, also promoting networks of participation and interaction with migrant families and the territory. The student will understand the interrelations among migrants’ living experiences, educational and cultural practices and comunity services. With adults, elderly people, families, the student will plan educational paths and will answer to the educational demands of the individuals and of the personal and social contexts of life. The student will build aware educational contexts, promoting participation and interaction with migrants, migrants’ families and with the territory.The student will gain knowledge about the theoretical and methodological instruments used by the empirical and experimental research in the pedagogical field in order to act in a transcultural perspective in complex plural social and educational contexts. The student will analyse the critical aspects of the migratory mobility and change dynamics and will apprehend educational strategies for the implementation of actions in the services and in the community work, promoting a plural and inclusive society, by means of multiple languages and experimenting artistic practices. All that with the aim of promoting new, innovative and original socio-pedagogical interventions in the fields of the community services, the employment services, the services for the adults and for the elderly people, in the name of plurality.

Teaching Methods

The didactics includes frontal lectures, aiming to promote the student’s participation and interaction, wit the aim of continual debate and exchange with them. The lectures will also include films projections, use of documentary films and other audiovisual documents, use of diaries, music, personal stories, biographies and autobiographies, etc. 
Workshops of critical lecture of audiovisual documents and seminars of in-depth study. will be proposed as well, on some issues of the course and including the presence of some experts and researches (Optional: workshops of first approach to the research methodologies and achievement of fieldworks on migrations and migrants will be proposed in addition.) 
In some of the seminars experts and researchers are invited to present their contribution on special issues concerning contemporary migrations and educational experimentations in the filed of child welfare services and the families.

Assessment Methods

The final examination wil be an oral one. The exam consists of the test of the knowledge and the competences by means of several modalities of evaluation:1) testing and evaluating the abilities of critically analizying the items of the course and motivate the acquired knowledge by debating the theoretical references, the eventual research works and case studies; 2) testing and evalutating the acquired knowledge by an oral discussion of the theoretical and methodological national and international references;3)evaluating the degree of participation and personal engagement and original contribution in the debate and activities during the course; 4)evaluating the ability of realizing connections at a multidisciplinary level and the competence of comprehending the specific items and methodological approaches connected to the course within the wider pedagogical context and within the methodological and scientific debate concerning the contemporary pedagogy. 
The oral examination consists of a discussion and critical analysis of the items and it includes the optional possibility of presenting and debating the issues of the course by means of original use of multimedia, audiovisual supports, authentical documents, artistic languages, etc.
Whenever the student wishes to achieve anoptional qualitative research activity and a fieldwork he might discuss and plan aims and modalities with the professor.

Contents

The course turns to a critical analysis of migratory mobility and of contemporary transnational migrations. The module studies the education coinceived as a mutiple and complex factor of the living experiences of migrants- as being a key factor for the comprhehension of the articultatiion of dynamics of migration and dynamics of social and cultural change. An in-deopth study will focus on migratory mobility in the Mediterranean, with a special attention to migration between Maghreb and Europ. It will be analysed the reconfiguration of migratory dynamics (regular and irregular ones, of refugees and no-refugees)in connection with the r change processes of the Arabic-Islamic countries. The study will include the interrelations among change dynamics, revolutionary dynamics and migratory dynamics in the in the Euro- Mediterranean area,. Il will be analyzed the case-study of Moroccan mobility in Europe. By means of the case-study of Tunisia and of the complex relations among trasnantional migratory mobility, artistic and cultural productions and revolutiornay processes the aim will be to understand the nexus among cultural, social movements, formal and informal education and places for learning "cultures of change".Case studies of contemporary migrations and forced migrations in Europe and in the Subsaharian context will be analyzed.  A special attention will be devoted in the Mediterranean context to the case of displaced people and forced migrants due to the on-going wars the in Middle East.

Different cases of planification of educational interventions in the community services and in the educational paths for adults, elderly people and families will be analysed, taking into special consideration the multiple transcultural aspects transforming the social contexts, the world of the work and the education, promoting the comparison with experts and other interlocutors, also coming from different national backgrounds. Educational strategies for the promotion of plurality and citizenship will be analysed together with a serious consideration of discrimnatory and racist practices in the contemporary social and educational contexts. Theories, methodologies and practices of the educational sciences will be analysed in order to identify and elaborate educational questions of the individuals and of the personal and social contexts of life and to be able to answer to theses questions, with a singular attention to the mutiple migratory living experiences.

An analyses of the terms and the words of dailiy life will be proposed , in order to understand the discriminatory practices also hidden inside the language, with the aim of finding an alternative language able to describe the reality, decolonizing the imaginary, taking into account the migrants’ living experiences and especially tanking into consideration the complexity and the humanity of the reality. At the end, the student will be able to debate how to operate, within social and educational interventions in the different  services of the community and of the social life, as well as in the employment services and in other services for the adults and the elderly people, with more competences in the fileld of migratory mobility and migrants' living experiences and with the awareness of such a complex and delicate reality.

More information

The students are invited, during the teaching period, to control the different possible proposals of seminars and workshops connected with the course. 
It is suggested to take part to few of them. 

Working students can choose a specific program talking to the professor, who is at their disposal either by mail and by meeting them during dedicated moments, in days and times to agree individually , in order to help them in comprehending specific parts of the course (whenever it might be necessary) or in order to identify specific individualised routes for preparing themselves to the exam. 

Working students are invited to let their names to the professor in order to be enrolled in the dedicated mailing list, so that they will be informed about seminars and workshops (especially devoted to working students) that might eventually take place in late afternoons or on Saturday mornings during the year. 


Notes for the ERASMUS students 

Erasmus students are very welcomed and they are invited to personally communicate to the professor in order to choose together a peculiar bibliography partially or totally in a foreign European language. 
Specific bibliographies in English, French and Spanish are at the disposal of the students. 

The teacher is at disposal of the students to check this program and eventually adapt and modificate in order to propose an individualized and facilitated program for each Erasmus' student in order to guarantee the full reconnaissance of the credits, according to the individual background of the student and to her/his competences in languages.
