Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students basic knowledge of materials and technologies used in the restoration and maintenance of reinforced concrete structures.

Maintenance and repair project (1/4 of mark) + oral test (3/4 of mark)

Contents

General introduction to repair and maintenance of reinforced concrete structures. Causes of deterioration and failure of reinforced concrete elements: material deterioration, construction faults, design errors. Analysis of cracking patterns in existing concrete structures: evaluation of steel stress in cracked sections.
Restoration and maintenance of building facades: waterproofing, repair of deteriorated concrete elements, protection by acrylic coating to avoid corrosion of steel reinforcements. Case Histories.
Shrinkage-compensating mortars and concrete for repair, consolidation and maintenance of concrete structures. Pre-packed flowable mixture to place into formwork. Proprietary thixotropic mortar both for manual and spray application. Case History.
Repair of architectural concrete elements. Case History.
Repair of reinforced concrete infrastructures. Case History
Consolidation and up-grade of existing columns. Repair of reinforced concrete slabs. Structural consolidation through enlargement by self-consolidating shrinkage-compensated mortars and concretes.
Repair of cracked concrete elements by epoxy resins.
Fiber reinforced plastics (Carbon, Aramid, Glass) to repair and consolidate reinforced concrete elements. Up-grade of beams to increase shear and flexural bearing capacity by means of composite pultruded plates or by wrapping. Ductility increase of beam-column connections. Case History
