Syllabus

Course Objectives

The Building Elements Technology course aims to provide students the necessary knowledge about construction techniques used in architecture, together with the ability to understand and analyse the relative constructive details.

Course Prerequisites

The course assumes that students have learned what treated in Learning in Practice course.

Teaching Methods

Lectures and exercises about the drafting of the design documentation.

Assessment Methods

Oral exams.

Contents

1. Structural system
Structural concrete and steel frames. Materials and base building elements. Construction schemes and load bearing capacity.

2. Vertical enclosures
Definitions, requirements and functional layers. Opaque vertical enclosures. Transparent vertical enclosures. Ventilated façades.

3. Horizontal enclosures
Definitions, requirements and functional layers. Lower, intermediate and roofing horizontal enclosures. Flat and sloped roofs.

4. Internal partitions
Definitions, requirements and functional layers. Fixed, folding and movable partitions.

5. Vertical connections
Definitions, requirements and performance.

6. Principles of sustainable design

7. BIM: Building Information Modeling
BIM method and role in the building sector. BIM design tools and parametric modeling. Major BIM design platforms. Examples of BIM design.
