Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with theoretical notions and practical skills on the application of qualitative research tools, as well as abilities to activate this knowledge in different contexts and for different purposes.

Students acquire skills in the use of participatory methods and which integrate artistic expressions of data collection, analysis and dissemination.

At the end of the course, students will have the necessary skills to:

  • evaluate the main advantages and disadvantages of the different methods explored;
  • use a range of methods within a practical research context at the postgraduate level;
  • communicate the course contents in a clear and unambiguous manner to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Teaching Methods

The teaching will take place through lectures during which special attention is paid to foster debate and collective discussion. Moments of experimentation with methods are also proposed, through the implementation of exercises and their discussion. With the involvement of the students, these practice-based activities can be reworked into dissemination projects. Scientific activities curated by the Creative Methods Open Lab research group will be open to the participation and involvement of students.


Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a 75-minute written test composed by 10 open questions with a short answer, which each worth 1/10 of the evaluation mark.

The exam allows to evaluate:

  • the knowledge and the understanding of the concepts;
  • the level of detail in the study;
  • the ability to synthesize;
  • the ability to establish connections.



Contents

Through the critical analysis of research examples, the course explores characteristics, complexity, potential, ethical aspects, and the relationship between researchers and participants of non-traditional qualitative research methods, as, in particular, participatory video, digital storytelling, video-diary, collage, walking interview, participatory theater, body mapping.

The syllabus applies equally to both attending and non-attending students. Erasmus students, as well as students with an Individualized Didactic Plan (PDP) or an Educational Intervention Plan (PEI), are encouraged to contact the course professor at the beginning of the course.
