Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

• Appreciate the role of strategy in success

• Use industry analysis to forecast industry profitability, to position the firm most favourably in relation to competitors and to develop strategies that influence industry structure

• Appraise the resources and capabilities in strategy formulation

• Understand the concept of competitive advantage and its sources

• Distinguish the two primary types of competitive advantage

• Examine innovation-based strategies as a source of competitive advantage

• Make recommendations for vertical and horizontal changes in the boundary of the firm

• Understand how sustainabillity affect strategy

• Demonstrate the ability to apply the key concepts and tools taught to different contexts and real-word scenarios.

Teaching Methods

Formal lectures, discussion of cases and guest seminars from invited experienced practitioners.


Assessment Methods

Assessment of attending students:

- Group assignment (20% of the final grade). The grade of the group assignment is valid for only one exam session (June or July), at the choice of the student. It is uploaded on the e-learning page of the course within 2 weeks after the end of classes.

- 40-minute written exam (80% of the final grade) with closed-ended and open-ended questions.


Assessment of non-attending students:

90-minute written exam with closed-ended and open-ended questions (also covering the case studies included in the syllabus).


Open-ended questions are evaluated according to the following criteria:

a) relevance of the answer to the question;

b) thoroughness of the answer;

c) ability to synthesize;

d) appropriacy of language.


Exam results will be uploaded on "sportello internet" and the student will be notified when the grade is available.
