Course Objectives
At the end of the course students will understand:
- the key aspects of human actions, such as choices, behaviors, and intentions, and reflect on their educational meaning, always considering the human person as the center of education
- the difference between education, training, and instruction, and be able to recognize how they appear in real school situations, especially during internships or in the case studies discussed in class
- the essential elements of educational action and how they work in teaching–learning processes within schools, considering the complexity of students, including their thinking, emotions, physical development, social life, and cultural background
In workshop activities connected to the lessons, they will reflect on real or narrated educational experiences, both individually and in small groups, and be able to observe and analyze people’s actions and behaviors, understanding their meaning from a pedagogical point of view. They will be also able to read and use the texts presented in class critically and thoughtfully, identifying the educational themes and problems they contain and connecting them to your own experience as a student or teacher.
Course Prerequisites
None
Teaching Methods
The teaching activities will be organized into modules that include both interactive lectures and practical workshop sessions. During the workshops, students will be guided to engage in reflective analyses of experiences and professional situations typical of various educational work environments. They will also carry out problem-posing and problem-solving activities, give oral and written reports on the outcomes of group work, and discuss topics with the instructor and classmates to encourage the development of individual and interpersonal skills, critical thinking, communication abilities, and learning capacity. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to propose in-depth explorations on current topics related to the themes of the course.
Assessment Methods
A reflective feedback process conducted during and at the end of each lesson, as well as of the cooperative work accompanying it, will be used for the continuous monitoring of the students’ teaching/learning process.
The assessment of the learning objectives will take place through an oral examination consisting of at least two questions: one on a text by G. Bertagna, and one on either Rousseau’s Émile or Laberthonnière’s Théorie de l’éducation. The final grade will be expressed on a 30-point scale and will be based on the following evaluation criteria: knowledge of the required texts; clarity and accuracy in presentation and argumentative structure; ability to personally and critically develop and discuss the topics addressed.
Exclusively for attending students who have submitted the written assignments given during the course, it will be possible to take a mid-term examination during the final class session. This will consist of a written test with two open-ended questions. The result of this test (if positive) will be taken into account in determining the final grade.
