Syllabus

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to have a comprehensive understanding of the unique operational logics of the international system, grasping the qualitative differences between domestic and international political life.

Through a historical-genetic reconstruction of the current system and an identification of the international arena's structural characteristics, students should also be able to discern the major trends marking the contemporary international landscape and comprehend the action rationales of key actors.

The acquired conceptual framework will enable students to develop an independent capacity for analyzing and judging international affairs, complementing insights gained from other courses. Furthermore, they will command the appropriate vocabulary to authoritatively articulate their opinions on world politics in various professional settings.

Course Prerequisites

A good knowledge of contemporary history and, possibly, modern history is strongly recommended.

Teaching Methods

Lectures, in-depth analyses, and in-class discussions of current events to grasp the relevance of the theories presented during the course.

Assessment Methods

The exam will consist of a written test including true/false, multiple-choice, and open-ended questions.

Contents

The goal of this course is to provide the essential tools and knowledge to understand the international political landscape and identify some of the key trends shaping contemporary global relations.

The curriculum will offer fundamental elements for the study of international relations, pinpointing its main foundations. It will provide an overview of the primary theoretical currents that have shaped the discipline of International Relations, including idealism, realism, Marxist theory, and constructivism.

Building on this theoretical basis, we will examine the distinctive characteristics of the international system, comparing them with domestic political systems. Emphasis will be placed on the dimensions of power, as well as the geographical, ideological, and institutional aspects that influence relations between states and non-state actors.

We will also focus on foreign policy and the factors that determine its choices, introducing security studies and the contemporary challenges states currently face.
