Course Objectives

At the end of the course, the student has acquired the sociological knowledge to understand the complexity of multicultural and intercultural societies and contemporary society and critically read the socio-historical phenomena associated with it: multiculturalism, post-colonialism, nation-nationalism, globalization, immigration, intercultural relations. Through this course, the student will have developed skills and sensitivities to understand and operate in social and organizational contexts characterized by a heterogeneity of cultural and national backgrounds. The student is able to consciously and effectively use and interpret the various meanings of the concepts of "culture" and "cultural otherness" at work in different communicative contexts and to critically decode discourses and rhetorics related to the themes of identity, cultural difference and multiculturalism. The student has also learned the theoretical tools to read and recognize social phenomena, related to multiculturalism, interculturalism and globalization and consequently design and implement strategies and techniques of cultural mediation.

Teaching Methods

Teaching will be conducted through face-to-face lectures, with an emphasis on discussion and direct dialogue with students. Attending students will be offered to read some texts before class so that they can actively participate in class discussions.

Assessment Methods

The examination will include a written test, lasting 80 minutes. The written test will consist of 2 open questions. Each question will be graded in thirtieths. The final grade will be the result of the arithmetic mean of the evaluation of the two questions.

The objective of the exam is to test the student's acquired knowledge, critical skills and ability to structure a correct text in the Italian language. Evaluation criteria include: completeness and relevance in answers, clarity in argumentation, ability to summarize and personally rework the questions posed, grammatical and syntactic correctness, ownership of language, and richness of exposition.

Contents

After a brief reflection on the concept of culture, ample space will be given to the theme of the social construction of cultural otherness, through the analysis of the concepts of "race" and "ethnicity," and to the theme of multicultural and intercultural societies and difference in a globalized society, delving into the social dynamics that led to the emergence of the theme of difference, the emergence of multicultural societies and the emergence of interculture. A number of socio-historical concepts and phenomena important for critical reflection on contemporary multicultural and intercultural societies will also be explored: colonialism, race/racism, nation/nationalism, ethnicity/ethnicity, community, as well as the links between multiculturalism and transnational migration, including gender and generations. Both theoretical works from various disciplines (sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, history) as well as ethnographic research and audio-visual material will be used to explore the various topics in depth.
