Syllabus

Course Objectives

The Quality Improvement in Healthcare course aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the principles, technologies and practices necessary to improve the quality of healthcare services.

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

· Learn and apply improvement technologies.

· Develop skills in collecting and analyzing data to identify quality issues and monitor progress.

· Apply basic statistical analysis techniques to interpret data and make informed decisions.

· Design and evaluate quality improvement interventions.

· Know the main types of automation in production systems used in production, handling, transport and storage.


Course Prerequisites

It is suggested to have followed the course of "Sistemi per la Gestione della Qualità".

Teaching Methods

Lectures and tutorials with practical examples of application of the various techniques introduced.
Discussion on the results obtained and on the suggestions derivable from the practical use of the different techniques.
Examples of output interpretation.

Assessment Methods

The final exam (written) consists in distinguishing between correct and incorrect statements about the topics covered, and in being able to answer theoretical questions on the principles and techniques discussed. Classroom assignement about the application of a quality is considered for the integration of the final degree. For non-attending students, only final exam (written) is required.

1.Principles of Quality Improvement

  • Introduction to the fundamental concepts of improving quality and safety in healthcare services.
  • History and development of quality improvement in healthcare.

2. Improvement Methodologies

  • Details of the main approaches such as the PDSA cycle, Six Sigma, Lean and QFD.
  • Practical applications and case studies.

3. Data Collection and Analysis Tools

  • Using tools such as flowcharts, histograms, Pareto diagrams and root cause analysis.
  • Introduction to health information systems and electronic databases.

4. Design and Implementation of Improvement Interventions

  • Identification of areas of intervention, development of solutions and project planning.
  • Stakeholder involvement and project management.

5.Integration of Digital Technologies

  • Use of project management software, digital platforms and online collaboration tools.
  • Technologies for data collection, analysis and visualization.

6. Healthcare Accreditation

  • Standards (LEA..) and accreditation processes.
  • Conformity assessment and continuous improvement to maintain accreditation.

7.Risk Management

  • Techniques for identifying and assessing risks.
  • Methods for managing and mitigating risks.

8. Evaluation of Improvement Interventions

  • Impact measurement and evaluation methodologies.
  • Digital tools for the analysis and evaluation of results.
