Overview

Primo Semestre (22/09/2025 - 19/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, students will have consolidated both their critical skills and their theoretical and methodological knowledge regarding intertextuality and transmediality. Firstly, they will have acquired the tools to analyze and interpret Spanish poetic texts from the 1600s, considering their content, form, and context. Secondly, they will have learned how to use texts from previous eras to analyze contemporary works, applying semiotic theories of intertextuality and transmediality.

The topics will also be approached from an educational perspective in order to provide additional opportunities for in-depth exploration.

Course Prerequisites

Students should have advanced knowledge of the Spanish language, in order to understand, interpret and work with complex texts, as well as a basic knowledge of Spanish history, culture and literature.

Teaching Methods

Teaching will take place through lectures in Spanish, sometimes using ppt or pdf files. Active student participation is required, particularly regarding textual analysis.

Throughout the course, professors from other Spanish or Italian universities may be invited to deliver specialized lectures.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of an oral test with open-ended questions (normally five or six). It will be conducted in Spanish and will cover the contents of the entire course program.

For those who attend the majority of the classes, the submission of in-class and take-home assignments is an option that can partially or fully replace the oral exam. Instruction will be provided during the lectures.

In both cases, the score (./30) will depend on:

- General knowledge of the period, authors, and theories studied;

- Interpretation skills in reading poems;

- Interpretation skills related to inter/transtextual references;

- Proper use of theoretical texts to support overall interpretation, with a critical approach;

- Communicative skills in Spanish (coherence, cohesion, clarity, accuracy, linguistic propriety and effective style).

Grading scale:

-Outstanding (30 e lode): excellent knowledge of all of the contents of the course and excellent skills in analyzing and contextualizing the texts. The student uses the academic register and the appropriate terminology. Spanish is correct.

- Very good (30 to 28): very good knowledge of the contents and very good skills in analyzing and contextualizing the texts. Spanish is fluent and contains hardly any mistakes.

- Good (27-25): good knowledge of the contents and good skills in analyzing and contextualizing the texts. Spanish is quite simple, but almost always correct.

- Fair (24-22): fair knowledge of the contents, even if not always complete, and some skills in analyzing the texts have been acquired. Spanish is simple and not always correct.

- Sufficient (21-18): sufficient knowledge of the contents, but not complete. The skills in analyzing the texts are not wholly satisfactory, but they are sufficient. Spanish is not wholly satisfactory.

- Fail (below 18): the knowledge of the contents is partial and confused. The texts are analyzed in a superficial and incoherent way. Spanish contains major errors.

Contents

After an introduction to the historical, cultural, and literary context of the 17th century in Spain, the course will focus on the poetic production of that era and its evolution, through the reading, analysis, and commentary of selected works. Subsequently, the course will explore the application of inter/transtextuality and transmediality as hemeneutic tools, by analyzing the reuse and influences of 17th-century Spanish poetry and other artistic and intellectual contexts in contemporary works.

More in detail, the course will cover the following topics:

- The 1600s:

1. Historical and cultural overview of 17th-century Spain

2. The three generations of Baroque poetry in Spain

3. Cultismo, Culteranismo, and other Baroque innovations

- Inter/Transtextuality and Transmediality:

4. Key theoretical frameworks

5. Possible applications of these theories to textual analysis

6. Discussion of studies based on inter/transtextuality and transmediality

- Practical section:

7. Tracing the Baroque influences in contemporary poetry (from the 1950s to the present).
