Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students:

- knowledge of the evolution of constructive methods from antiquity until today, in order to understand the connection between constructive system and architectural shape;

- ability of applying this knowledge to selected historical buildings and to the buildings selected for direct analysis.

- knowledge of historical research methods (bibliography and archives researches, use of written sources).


Course Prerequisites

A basic knowledge of art history will be useful.


Teaching Methods

The course is held through lectures and seminars with a specific attention to the interaction and the dialogue of students. This method is supported by visual tools (power point presentations) and multimedia connections, in order to facilitate learning. Some lessons will be held in co-presence with other teachers.

Homework on the exercise theme chosen for the Integrated Course.



Assessment Methods

Oral exam for the verification of the knowledge and the understanding of the topics presented in the lectures and the reference books.


Contents

Basic information is proposed about the construction techniques from the Greek age until first half of XX century. By means of the more significant examples of architectures belonging to different ages, the technical aspects will be illustrated, related on one hand to the materials and technology used, on the other to the context, the customer, the designer, the site organization and the production costs. One or more lectures will be dedicated to historical research methods.
