Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course provides a broad survey of analog and digital electronics, with particular focus on the issues relevant to electronic measurement systems in industry. The aim is to familiarise students with the devices and techniques commonly used in electronic instrumentation. The main topics are microelectronic technologies and devices, operational amplifiers (linear and non-linear analog signal processing), analog-to-digital converters, CMOS digital systems (from basic logic gates to complex systems such as RAM and ROM memories).

Assessment Methods

Written exam at the end of the course. The exam requires that students provide the solution to two exercises about electronic circuits, and answer three questions about the subjects discussed during the course.

1. Introduction. Evolution of microelectronic technologies. Moore's Law. Electronic systems for signal acquisition and control. Analog and digital signals. 2. Mathematical tools. Fourier analysis. Frequency spectrum. Inductive and capacitive impedances. Low pass, high pass, bandpass filters. Bode diagrams. Step response. 3. Electronic devices. Intrinsic and doped semiconductors. P-N junction diodes. MOSFET. NMOS e PMOS. Static characteristics and small-signal model. Nanoscale CMOS fabrication process. 4. Operational amplifiers. MOSFET differential amplifiers. Ideal operational amplifier. Negative feedback. Inverting and noninverting amplifier. Instrumentation amplifier. Integrators and differentiators. Bandpass filter. 5. Nonlinear circuits with operational amplifiers. Comparator. Half-wave and full-wave rectifiers. Peak detectors. Logarithmic and exponential amplifiers. Analog circuits with switches. Multiplexer. Sample & Hold. 6. Digital electronics. Logic states. Noise immunity. Binary code, Gray code. Logic families. Noise margin, propagation delay, power dissipation. OR, AND, NOT, NAND, NOR, Exclusive OR.
