Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide a basic knowledge on materials, with particular attention to the materials used for biomedical applications. At the end of the course students will have acquired the basic concepts of stress, strain, stiffness, strength and toughness of the materials. They will have acquired basic information about the mechanical behavior of different classes of materials: metals, polymers, ceramics and composites. The technologies of production of different materials and their influence on their behavior will be also briefly described. Finally it will be analyzed the resistance to degradation of the materials, particularly with respect to biocompatibility.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of chemistry (chemical bonds, pH, chemical elements) and physic.

Teaching Methods

The teaching will take place through lectures.
Exercises devoted to the mechanical properties of materials will be planned, also in relation to the definition of material selection criteria for the specific application.

Assessment Methods

Ongoing tests during the course. Telematic written exam with 27 closed questions with answer chosen from 4 possibilities, each valid 1 point and two or three numeric exercises. At the end of the ongoing tests, those who have obtained the sufficiency in both will be able to take a short oral interview. Those who do not participate or pass the ongoing tests will have to take the written exam which will always focus on 27 closed questions with a choice of 4 answers and two or three numeric exercises. The score is similar to the ongoing tests, 1 point on request. Only by passing the written exam will the oral exam be accessed. At the end of the writing the results (in 30simi) will be displayed on the web page of the course with the calendar of the oral interviews.
Students who have obtained at least 18/30 in the written test will be admitted to the oral exam.

Contents

Main classes of materials: macrostructure and microstructure; correlation between structure and properties.
Biomaterials: biofunctionality, biocompatibility, sterility.
Properties of materials.
Mechanical properties: concept of stress and strain. Definition of tensile force, compression, shear and bending. Elastic behavior: Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio. Brittle and ductile behavior: plastic straining, yield strength and ultimate tensile strenght.
Mechanical properties of metals, ceramics, polymers and composites. Core material and sandwich structures.
Bases of physical properties: heat transfer, electricity, magnetism.
Technologies for processing metallic, polymers, ceramics and composites materials.
Resistance to degradation of metals, polymers, ceramics and composites.
Metallic biomaterials. Polymeric biomaterials. Ceramic biomaterials.
Examples of materials for biomedical applications.
