The course is concerned with the seismic design of buildings. To this end, the course program deals with the basics of seismic design and conceptual design of buildings. Some advanced issues in the design of reinforced concrete structures are also dealt with. The student must prove to master the preliminary design of a reinforced concrete building located in a seismic zone, to be able to carry out the seismic analysis of the building, and to size and verify a few relevant structural elements. At the end of the course, the students will be able to set-up the design of r.c. structures under both static and seismic actions.
Course Prerequisites
Students must have a basic knowledge of reinforced concrete design and of structural dynamics
Teaching Methods
Lectures and tutorials in classroom and meetings with a tutor during the development of the design assignment.
Assessment Methods
The exam is based on a discussion of the student’s assignment (preliminary design and analysis of a r.c. building) and an oral exam, finalized to assess the comprehension of the subjects studied.
