Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (16/02/2026 - 29/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course equips students with the tools to understand and analyze the economic characteristics of tourism, focusing on demand, supply, pricing, taxation, and network dynamics. Among other things, network externalities will be introduced with applications to specific markets (e.g., telecommunications), and tourism economics and services in the air transport sector will be explored in depth. Students will gain a solid understanding of these topics and the related economic fundamentals.

The course meets the AVA declarations for the SECS/P08 sector and the objectives of the Planning and Management of Tourism Systems (international second-level degree course), particularly those related to economy and industry, with an emphasis on managing the demand and supply of goods and services in national and international contexts.

Course Prerequisites

There are no specific prerequisites for this course. However, a basic knowledge of tourism economics and active participation in Module 1 of the integrated course can be helpful for a better understanding of the topics covered.

Teaching Methods

The course adopts an interactive and applied approach, combining lectures, case studies, in-class discussions, and group or individual work. The goal is to encourage active student participation and the practical application of theoretical concepts.

The course includes 36 hours of teaching, with 24 hours led by the main instructor and 12 hours delivered by a distinguished international professor.

Slides, supporting materials, and additional content will be uploaded to the course’s Moodle page, which will also serve as the main platform for communication and provide access to the updated course schedule.

Assessment Methods

For both attending and non-attending students, the exam will be written and based on the course content. It will consist of an initial multiple-choice section, which will serve both as a screening phase and as part of the final evaluation. Only students who pass this section will proceed to the second part, which includes three open-ended questions.

Students who have completed group activities (e.g., project work) will have the option to skip one of the three open-ended questions of their choice. In this case, their group activity evaluation will replace the score of the skipped question.

The exam can be taken at the end of the course during one of the scheduled sessions. Results will be published online.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to tourism economics and its key characteristics
  • Tourism demand and supply
  • Tourism pricing and taxation
  • Introduction to networks and network externalities with applications to specific markets
  • In-depth analysis of tourism economics and services in the air transport sector
