Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to develop students’ understanding of the nature and the role of European Union law andthe relevant international law in the regulation of tourism, with regard to duties and rights especially in relation to the transport sector. Students will develop competence in analysing, interpreting and applying legal rules by studying legal sources and through case studies.




Course Prerequisites

No prerequisites.


Teaching Methods

The teaching will comprise lectures and discussion of materials provided in class, as well as analysis of case studies. Classes are taught in English.


Assessment Methods

The final examination will consist of a written test, with general questions concerning the topics dealt withwithin the course, as well as some specific questions relating to a case study. In-class exercises or groupwork will be carried out during the course, the results of which may be taken into account for the final grade. The exam is aimed at verifying the level of preparation and the analytical and argumentative skills of the student.


Contents

The course consists of one part dedicated to preliminary fundamental notions and a second part concerning specific arguments. In particular, the programme covers: Introduction to law and legal rules (The basics of international law; European Union law: fundamental concepts; The European Union and tourism policy: anoverview); Air passenger rights in international law and European Union Law; Package travel; International sea, train and bus travel: passenger rights; Hotel Liability; The international rights of tourist service providers; International tourism law and international institutions (the World Tourism Organisation).

Class attendance is not compulsory, but strongly recommended. The programme and the exam are the same for attending and non-attending students.
