Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to analyse, by means of a method combining the statutes of the scientific and humanistic disciplines, the nature of digital technology in order to make use of the existing tools in the digital transformation with awareness and critical spirit.

Course Prerequisites

None

Teaching Methods

Lessons will be delivered using presentations (slides and videos) and web resources. It includes the critical reading of some articles and research, the examination of websites and social media.

For some topics, if the participants are suitable and motivated, a seminar practice with proposals for further study or debate may be used.

Assessment Methods

Depending on the number of students enrolled and their responsiveness during the course, it will be decided whether to conduct the examination in written form (multiple-choice questions, open questions on the bibliography, seminar papers during the year by students) or oral form (questions on the course and bibliography and seminar papers). We reserve the right to assess the different opportunities on the basis of observation of classroom interaction between lecturer and students during the first lessons of the course.

Knowledge of what was covered in class (topics and web resources analysed), of the texts indicated as the course bibliography and those for further study indicated in the course of the lectures, and of any seminar presentations will be assessed. For non-attending students, particular attention will be paid to the compulsory bibliography and to the critical reading of the texts suggested in the course of the lectures.

Contents

The following arguments will be discussed:

  • the fundamental concepts (the disciplinary statutes, i.e. the scientific principles) of digital technology
  • the basics of the functioning of the digital technological tools used, their operation and application (i.e. methods)
  • issues and problems opened up by the use of digital technology as a form of communication, research and representation

In order to do so, the main mechanisms of the functioning of digital devices will be described through the analysis of the disciplinary statutes underlying their functioning and use:

  • foundations of mathematics, computer science and physics
  • foundations of the representation of digital objects involved in digital transformation
  • philosophical, anthropological and social problems opened up by digital representation
  • analysis of human/machine interaction in digital aesthetics
  • hints at the economics of digital production and its sustainability

Particular attention will be given, also with appropriate examples, to the digital representation of:

  • texts and documents
  • images and sounds
  • objects and artefacts
  • spaces and environments

The course of the lectures aims to arrive at a shared discussion, leading to a conscious analysis, not only of digital techniques, but above all of their use and sustainability, on an individual, social and environmental level. Analyses of a historical, philosophical and social nature, both in the scientific and humanistic spheres, will allow a greater understanding and a more conscious use of the digital in today's pervasiveness.
